This aerial view looks across the federal government buildings toward the Washington Monument, so the obelisk anchors the composition and shows how the city's core was laid out by the 1930s. The monument, completed in 1884, stood at the western end of the National Mall, and the surrounding blocks were being rebuilt in those years as the Federal Triangle went up between Constitution and Pennsylvania avenues. Photographs taken from the air were still a novelty then, and this one, credited to the commercial firm Underwood & Underwood, records the scale of that construction. The date of about 1937 comes from the caption card, which the library notes is unverified.
