Few American monuments are as recognizable as the Washington Monument, the marble obelisk on the National Mall shown in this color print. Construction began in 1848 to a design by Robert Mills, stalled for years when funds ran short in the 1850s, and was finally completed in 1884 at about 555 feet tall. This example is a photochrom, a process the Detroit Publishing Co. used around 1903 to turn photographs into bright color prints for the tourist trade.
