The Washington Monument rises in the middle distance of this view, with the Bureau of Engraving visible at the far left edge, a detail the photographer chose to keep in frame. The picture is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, made sometime between 1900 and 1920, when the company was producing large-format views of American cities and landmarks for sale as souvenirs and travel prints. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which produces paper money and other federal securities, sat close enough to the Mall to appear alongside the obelisk, placing a working government building beside a symbol of national memory. The negative came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift and entered the Library of Congress collection later.
