The Bureau of Engraving and Printing building in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, captured on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company. The bureau printed the nation's paper currency, bonds and postage stamps, so the building stood at the center of federal money-making at the time. Detroit Publishing, known for its large-format views of American cities, scenery and landmarks, recorded many federal buildings in the early twentieth century. Its glass plates, like this one, preserve the look of Washington before later expansions reshaped the area.
