Money moving through the capital is the subject here: a horse-drawn currency wagon belonging to the U.S. Treasury, photographed in Washington around 1906. Before motor trucks became common, cash and coin were often carried by wagon between government offices and banks, and a vehicle like this one suggests how much valuable material moved through the city's streets. The negative is from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, landmarks and street life around the turn of the twentieth century. Its large 8 by 10 inch glass plate gives the picture enough detail to study the wagon's build and the street around it.
