The Treasury Building shown here is the one standing on the north side of the White House grounds, a granite-and-marble structure begun in 1836 and expanded many times over the following decades. The record notes a fountain among its subjects, which points to the landscaped approach that gave the stereograph its place in the "Metropolitan and suburban scenery" series. William M. Chase, the photographer behind the card, produced many views of Washington's public buildings for stereoscopic viewers, which were a popular parlor entertainment in the 1870s and 1880s. Looking closely at the pair of images, you can see how the paired lenses gave a sense of depth to the building's columns and grounds.
