The view shows the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., the granite government office block that fills the block at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, a short walk from the White House. The catalog dates the print to between 1885 and 1895, a period when the building had long been the federal government's main financial office and the surrounding avenues were busy with carriages and streetcars. Its heavy classical facade, built over several decades of construction, was a deliberate statement of national permanence. The print is useful for seeing how the building anchored this stretch of the capital before the later expansion of federal offices nearby.
