Sherman Square, at Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street NW, holds this equestrian monument to General William Tecumseh Sherman, whose 1864 march through Georgia to the sea made him one of the Union's best-known commanders. The bronze statue by Danish-born sculptor Carl Rohl-Smith shows Sherman on horseback, with a winged figure of Victory striding ahead to lead him. Sherman died in 1891, and the monument was dedicated in 1903, so this view from the early twentieth century would have shown it still fairly new.
