Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that runs north through the District of Columbia, is the subject here, and this 8 by 6 inch glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington in the early twentieth century. The company's plates were made for sale to visitors and publishers, so they capture the city as its boosters wanted it seen. The park itself was set aside in 1890 to preserve a natural stream corridor close to the capital. Because the title and date were recorded from the negative sleeve and sister negatives rather than verified directly, the exact view is best read as a document of that wooded setting around 1920.
