Few monuments in the capital draw as many visitors as the bronze figure known as *Grief*, which sits in a granite alcove in Rock Creek Cemetery. Augustus Saint-Gaudens made it for Henry Adams, who commissioned the memorial for his wife, Marian Hooper Adams, after her death in 1885. The hooded, seated figure was completed in 1891 and has long been read as an image of sorrow without a fixed name. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington streets and landmarks in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative sometime between about 1910 and 1935.
