Few details in the record pin down this particular span, but it shows one of the stone bridges that carried visitors across the wooded valley of Rock Creek in northwest Washington, a park Congress set aside in 1890 to preserve a natural creek corridor within the growing capital. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made thousands of views like this one for sale as prints and postcards. The glass negative dates from roughly 1910 to 1935, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, which is part of what makes it worth a closer look.
