Few sculptures in the capital invite as much speculation as the hooded bronze figure in Rock Creek Cemetery, known as the Grief Monument. Augustus Saint-Gaudens made it in the late 1880s for Henry Adams, who commissioned it in memory of his wife, Marian Hooper Adams, after her death in 1885. The face beneath the hood is hidden in shadow, and visitors have debated its meaning ever since. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company between about 1910 and 1935, records the memorial during the decades when the company photographed Washington's landmarks.
