The north front of the Smithsonian Institution's castle, shown here in June 1862, is the detail that sets this albumen print apart from other views of the building. The Smithsonian, founded in 1846 with a bequest from the British scientist James Smithson, had by the Civil War become a national repository for scientific collections, and its red sandstone building on the National Mall was then a fresh and somewhat unfinished landmark. Washington in 1862 was a city of soldiers, hospitals and wartime traffic, and the subject index also records wildflowers, a reminder of the grounds around the building that were still raw and lightly planted.
