Connecticut Avenue running north from Chevy Chase Circle shows one of the city's main northwest approaches just where the District meets Maryland. The circle sits at the edge of the Chevy Chase neighborhood, and by the years this view was made, the avenue was becoming a residential corridor as well as a route into the countryside beyond the city limits. The photograph was taken by H.E. French and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of street views made in Washington in the early twentieth century. It is worth looking at the roadway, the streetcar tracks and the surrounding buildings for clues about how this edge of the capital worked before automobiles dominated it.
