Here the artist sets the first White House, still under construction in its raw stone, against the rail-served capital of 1931, a pairing the Pennsylvania Railroad used to tie its service to the nation's past. In the late 1790s Washington was a newly planned city, with scattered building sites and unpaved streets, and the presidential residence was among its most closely watched projects. Newell Convers Wyeth, a leading illustrator of his day, produced this color offset, and his historical scenes of this kind were a staple of American railroad advertising in the period.
