Few Pittsburgh images set the city's frontier beginnings beside its modern rail life as directly as this one. Its caption dates the founding of Fort Prince George to February 17, 1754, when Virginia's forces built a post at the Forks of the Ohio, a site the French soon seized and rebuilt as Fort Duquesne. Illustrator N.C. Wyeth, best known for his historical paintings, made this color offset print for the Pennsylvania Railroad, which by then carried passengers and freight into the city. The date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
