Few American railroad terminals were drawn from as high a viewpoint as this one, which shows the Pennsylvania Railroad's new Washington terminal as a sprawling Beaux-Arts complex set within the city's grid. The design came from D. H. Burnham & Co. of Chicago, the firm led by Daniel Burnham, whose work helped shape the city-planning movement of the period. The engraving was produced around 1906 by the John A. Lowell Bank Note Co. of Boston, a firm known for detailed commercial and promotional views. The station opened in 1907 and was one of the most ambitious rail projects in the capital, with its granite and marble classical facade and great vaulted concourse.
