Hanover Junction, a rail crossing in south-central Pennsylvania, appears here as a station and rows of boxcars in a stereograph pair meant to be viewed together. Dated 1863, the view comes from a year when rail lines in this region carried Union troops and supplies, which made depots like this one strategically important. The images were made from glass negatives using the wet collodion process, which required plates to be coated and exposed before they dried. Records once credited Alexander Gardner with the work, though that attribution is now uncertain.
