Few American stations were as grand as the Pennsylvania Railroad's terminal on the block between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, and this view looks into its interior from the 33rd Street side. The station opened in 1910 with a Beaux-Arts design by McKim, Mead & White, and its great waiting hall and concourse were built to serve long-distance trains entering Manhattan through tunnels beneath the city. The item is a halftone reproduction of an earlier photoprint, a method that let photographs be printed alongside type in books and periodicals. The caption card gives no date, so the year of the original photograph is uncertain, but the scene belongs to the building's life before it was demolished in the 1960s.
