The Pennsylvania Railroad's terminal in Manhattan was among the largest rail stations in the country, and this c1911 print dates from the years just after it opened. Designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White, the station was linked to tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers, and its main building drew on the grand Beaux-Arts style and the monumental architecture of ancient Roman baths. The original station was demolished in the early 1960s, and its loss became a widely cited case in the later American preservation movement.
