Photographed in October 1908, this view captures the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in New York while construction was still underway. The architects McKim, Mead & White designed it as a granite and marble Beaux-Arts terminal, and the railroad's tunnels under the Hudson River were built to bring trains into Manhattan. The station opened in 1910 and was demolished in the 1960s, which makes construction-stage pictures like this one a record of a building now gone. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its title comes from caption data that has not been fully verified.
