Chatham Square, where the Bowery, Park Row and several other streets meet at the edge of Lower Manhattan, was one of the busiest junctions for the city's elevated railways. This view shows an elevated station rising above the street, with its iron structure carrying steam trains over the traffic below. Elevated lines had reached the city by the late 1860s, and they changed neighborhoods by moving riders quickly while filling the streets with smoke, noise and shadow. The record credits the copyright to Charles Pollock and dates the picture to about 1880, so it is best read as an approximate snapshot of the elevated becoming part of everyday city life.
