The elevated tracks at 110th Street in Manhattan show the steel structure carrying trains high above the street, a common sight in turn-of-the-century New York, where elevated lines ran along the avenues to relieve crowded surface streets. This view was made by the Detroit Photographic Company using the photochrom process, a color printing method that transferred photographs onto stone lithographic plates, producing soft, painterly tones. The company compiled such images into albums to serve as a catalog for its office, so this print reflects both the city's rapidly changing transit network and the commercial appeal of color views around 1900.
