The Bowery, one of Manhattan's oldest commercial streets, is seen here with elevated railway tracks running overhead, their iron supports throwing shadows across the sidewalks below. At the turn of the twentieth century the street was crowded with shops, saloons, and theaters, and the trains above added to its noise and bustle. The view was produced by the photochrom process, a method of making color prints from photographs that the Detroit Publishing Company used for its American city and landscape views. The saturated colors are typical of that process.
