Few places were promoted as heavily in the 1890s as the Thousand Islands, the cluster of rocky islands in the St. Lawrence River where it flows out of Lake Ontario, and this print was made to sell that scenery to travelers. Issued around 1893 by the Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, it belongs to the numbered Four Track Series of illustrated pamphlets that the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad used to advertise its routes. Its focus on fishing and summer tourism reflects how the railroad carried city dwellers from the Hudson Valley and beyond to the river resorts, where anglers and vacationers could spend their summers on the water.
