This color poster from 1941 presents the New York Central's Empire State Express, the railroad's named train between New York City and Buffalo. The train took its name from New York State, and by the early twentieth century it was a showcase for the line's fastest and most prestigious service. Its reputation dated to the 1893 run of locomotive No. 999, which was widely reported to have reached about 112 miles per hour. In 1941, American railroads used posters like this one to sell passenger travel, and the image asks viewers to see the train as modern, fast, and worth riding.
