Rather than a city skyline or a locomotive, this poster points to the Highlands, the rugged stretch of the Hudson River valley north of New York City where the mountains crowd down to the water. The New York Central ran its passenger trains along that eastern shore, so the artwork sold the scenic ride as much as the destination. Leslie Ragan, a commercial artist who designed several railroad posters in the 1940s, worked when rail travel still competed with the automobile for vacationers, and this color poster reflects that effort to make a train trip look like the best way to see the river.
