Rather than a city street or a station platform, this chromolithograph shows the Finger Lakes region of central New York, the long glacial lakes south of Lake Ontario that drew summer travelers in the late 1800s. The New York Central & Hudson River Railroad commissioned it as a promotional piece, and its color scenery was meant to make the lakes seem an easy trip from New York City and other eastern cities. Railroads of that era issued such illustrated pamphlets and timetables as a way to sell leisure travel, and chromolithography, a multistone color printing process, gave them vivid, marketable images.
