Albert Sébille's lithograph ties two modes of travel into a single promise: a traveler could leave Paris by train, reach the Atlantic port of Le Havre, and board an ocean liner bound for New York. Printed in Paris by NOVIA sometime between 1920 and 1930, the poster reflects the boom in transatlantic passenger service that followed the First World War, when French shipping lines and the Paris rail network competed for travelers heading to America. Le Havre, a port on the Seine estuary, was the departure point for many of those crossings, and the poster's color and bold composition were typical of the advertising art that railway and steamship companies commissioned to sell the journey as modern and glamorous.
