A steam-hauled elevated train rounds a curve high above a horse-drawn wagon, a reminder of how closely Manhattan's street life once ran beneath its iron railways. By 1895 the city's elevated lines, built on cast-iron columns above avenues such as Second, Third, Sixth, and Ninth, had carried passengers for decades, and their locomotives filled the streets below with smoke and cinders. The sharp bends were a common feature of these routes, where the tracks had to follow the street grid. Electrification in the years after this photograph was taken would change the character of the lines.
