Believed to show the elevated line near 110th Street in upper Manhattan, this view records the iron structures that carried trains above the city's avenues in the 1890s. Steam locomotives still pulled these trains, and their smoke and cinders drifted onto the streets and into nearby windows, which made the elevated lines unpopular with many residents. The photograph carries a copyright notice in the name of J.S. Johnston, a sign that views of the city's rapidly expanding transit system were made to be reproduced and sold.
