Railroad cars on 11th Avenue set this view apart from other rail scenes, because freight trains once ran at street level down this stretch of Manhattan's Far West Side, earning the avenue the nickname Death Avenue. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early 1900s. The record gives no firm date, and its title is noted as unverified, so the exact year is uncertain. The scene shows a time when tracks and city traffic shared the same ground, a arrangement later replaced by the elevated High Line in the 1930s.
