Overhead tracks of the elevated railroad run down the middle of the Bowery in this view, with storefronts, signs, and street traffic filling the block below. The Manhattan elevated lines were built in the 1870s and ran over the street for decades, shaping the look and noise of lower Manhattan. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that the Detroit Photographic Company used to make its views of American cities. This print comes from a Detroit Publishing Company album that the firm kept as a sales catalog, so it was meant to show buyers what the company could offer.
