A snowstorm has stopped a line of railway cars on Fourth Avenue in New York, and the scene shows how quickly winter weather could halt city traffic when rail lines ran through the streets. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose News Service negatives documented New York street life in the early twentieth century. The record dates it to January 24, 1908, though the title comes from caption data the archive has not verified. Viewers today may notice how the snow-covered cars and the surrounding avenue reflect the city's dependence on rail transit before the tracks were later moved underground.
