Few stations in America were as ambitious as the Pennsylvania Railroad's New York terminal, and this October 1908 view shows it still rising on its Manhattan site. Designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White, the station was built to carry trains under the Hudson River into the heart of the city, and it opened in 1910. Its classical colonnade and vaulted waiting room made it a landmark, and its demolition in 1963 later helped spark the historic preservation movement.
