A horse-drawn streetcar carried passengers along the rails of Washington, D.C., in a photograph whose caption card gives no date. Horsecar lines spread through the city in the decades after the Civil War, when they offered a smoother ride than omnibuses on paved streets. Each car needed a team of horses or mules, and the animals' labor and upkeep shaped the cost and pace of city travel. Electric trolleys replaced most of these lines in the 1890s. The card's subject tracings, "Street RR" and "Geogr.," suggest the image was filed under both urban transit and place.
