East Capitol Street runs straight east from the United States Capitol, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative frames the building at the far end of the broad avenue. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the plate between 1905 and 1920, sold travel views of American cities and scenery to a national market. The Capitol's cast-iron dome, finished in the 1860s, was by then a familiar national symbol. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
