The east front drawn here shows the Capitol with a low, squat dome, an early version of the building's design from the years when its form was still being settled. William Thornton's original plans shaped this period, and the design passed through several hands as the project changed. George Washington laid the cornerstone in 1793, and drawings from the 1790s record how the dome and façade were still under debate. The proportions are worth studying, since the dome shown here was later replaced by a much taller one.
