This drawing shows the east front of the U.S. Capitol with a low, squat dome, a proposal that reflects the building's earliest planning. Construction began in the 1790s after George Washington laid the cornerstone on September 18, 1793, and the design went through several revisions as architects William Thornton, Stephen Hallet, and George Hadfield worked on the building. Comparing this lower profile with the taller dome built later in the 19th century shows how the design of the Capitol changed while the nation's government was still taking shape in the new capital.
