Engine Company No. 12 occupied a firehouse at 1626 North Capitol Street in northwest Washington, and this view records the building as it stood around 1905. Around that time the city's engine companies relied on horse-drawn apparatus, and the stables and apparatus bays of neighborhood firehouses were often built to house both horses and equipment. The picture survives as a 1970s printing from a ca. 1905 original by a photographer named Ross, part of the James M. Goode Collection, so its details of street, architecture and daily fire-service life offer a glimpse of Washington's early twentieth-century streetscape.
