Rather than the streets of Georgetown, this view is taken from Mason's Island across the Potomac, looking back at the sailing vessels tied up along the river. Mathew Brady is credited as the photographer, and the picture dates to 1865, as the war was ending and Washington was crowded with soldiers and military supply traffic. Georgetown was a river port long before the federal city was laid out. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate quickly.
