The camera caught the Georgetown University observatory, a stone tower on the Jesuit campus in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Jesuits founded the observatory in the 1840s, and it became one of the older scientific institutions in the capital, used for astronomical and meteorological observation. This view comes from a large glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad survey of American places in the decade around 1900. The plate's size, 8 by 10 inches, reflects the detail that photographers of that era could record in a single exposure.
