Taken from the Georgetown University observatory, this view looks out over the college grounds and the surrounding streets of Washington's Georgetown neighborhood. The Jesuit-run school was founded in 1789 as Georgetown College, making it one of the oldest Catholic universities in the United States. The observatory, built on campus in the 1840s, gave the college's astronomers a high vantage point for their work. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its commercial views of American cities and landscapes.
