The bridge in this 1917 print is the Cabin John Bridge, whose single stone arch spanned Cabin John Creek in Montgomery County, just outside the District. Here a barge sits on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which ran along the Potomac from Georgetown toward Cumberland, Maryland. Mules walking the towpath pulled such barges loaded with coal and other goods, and in 1917 the canal was still a working route, though its commercial traffic was already declining. The scene shows how the waterway and its stone structures shared the landscape with the railroads and roads that were replacing it.
