Ford's theater on Tenth Street is best known as the site where President Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, during a performance of *Our American Cousin*. The building was a working playhouse for only a short time before that night, and the federal government took it over afterward. By the years this glass negative was made, roughly 1918 to 1920, the theater was no longer used for performances, and the building was a point of national memory in the capital. The National Photo Company made many views like this one for public sale, so the image records how the landmark looked to the city's visitors in the decades after the assassination.
