This glass negative records the front of a theater in Washington, D.C., which sets it apart from the company's many street and building views. The title, "Lust, Leader," comes from the National Photo Company's own notes and has not been independently verified. The company photographed the city's streets and buildings over more than two decades, and its early 1920s work shows a capital where neighborhood theaters were busy centers of film and live entertainment. The 8 by 6 inch plate shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these negatives are.
