Few photographs from the first year of the war show a regiment in its own camp, and this one records a Massachusetts infantry unit, the Ninth, encamped near Washington in 1861. The regiment drew heavily on Irish-born and Irish-American volunteers, which is why the catalog also lists Irish Americans in military service among its subjects. Catalogers also tagged the view with a church in Virginia, a reminder of how close the camps sat to the local countryside. The print is an albumen photograph from the Brady studio, though the Library of Congress notes that it was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner.
