Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C., gives this view an unusual setting for a subject that was new to most Americans in the early 1920s. The title comes from information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified, so the scene itself is the best guide. Commercial radio broadcasting spread quickly across the country after 1920, and institutions were beginning to adopt the technology. The National Photo Company documented many aspects of life in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s, and Herbert A. French gave this glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
