The Brighton at 2123 California Street was an apartment building in the residential northwest section of Washington, D.C., and this glass negative records its facade in the years between 1918 and 1928. That period saw steady growth in multi-unit housing across the capital as government workers and professionals sought homes within reach of downtown offices. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, which photographed the city's buildings and streets in the early twentieth century. The streaks and blemishes across the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, not from the scene itself, and they are worth noticing when you study the image.
