Labeled with the address 1859 California Street in Washington, D.C., this glass negative captures a specific corner of the capital rather than a famous landmark. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets, buildings and daily life in the early twentieth century, likely made it around 1921 or 1922, based on its date range. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
